A missed opportunity
A girl born in Korea to Korean parents is given for adoption to a French couple. She grows up in France, but, in her twenties, she returns to Korea looking for her biological parents and her roots. Interesting premise. The first 30-40 minutes of the film were done carefully and intelligently. Kept me interested – even intrigued. Then … it all went off the rails. I suspect that the intention of the director (who is also the script writer) was to shock and awe. All he achieved was to confuse and annoy. The plot made no sense, the actions of the main character lacked coherence and justification. Random scenes with no rhyme or reason interposed with some attempts to squeeze some tears from the audience, seasoned with some stereotypes and some totally out-there side plots (the girl becomes an arm dealer after meeting and older sexy (?) guy in a bar on her birthday… – that’s no spoiler as it has nothing to do with the rest of the story anyway). This director does not seem to know the difference between “artistic license” and, as the French say, “n’importe quoi” (= nonsense )
Anyway 4 out of 10 stars for this movie for the first 40 minutes and the solid acting of the main character who had to put up with an inane plot.
